Tamer's Ledger

Quick reference for every animal you can tame before the Mistlands, then how the system works, then tips per animal.

Checked against 1.0.20 (Oct 15, 2026) and the community wiki. No taming changes in 1.0 patches so far.

Quick reference

One row per animal. Filters above apply to every table on the page. Click a heading to sort.

Tame time assumes the animal stays fed and calm with a player nearby. Brew of animal whispers halves it. A dash means that animal never has that star level.

Drops by star

Percentages are drop chances. Trophy chance scales with stars as of 1.0.20.

Mechanics

How the system works for every animal. Hens are the exception: they hatch already tame, so only the feeding and breeding rules apply to them.

Taming, step by step
  1. Trap it in a pen or a pit.
  2. Drop food it accepts within its eating range. A whole stack is fine; it eats one item at a time.
  3. Stay within about 64 m so the area stays loaded. Yellow hearts mean progress.
  4. Taming ticks every 3 seconds while the animal is fed and calm. It needs 600 ticks, so 30 minutes. Uninterrupted, that is 3 pieces of food.
  5. Done when the "has been tamed" message shows. Rename it with LShift + E.

Rules
  • Hungry, alerted (red !) or unloaded animals pause taming. Progress is never lost.
  • Animals check for food every 10 s and must be able to path to it.
  • Nothing starves. Hungry tamed animals stop breeding and stop regenerating health, and that is all.
  • Sleeping does not speed up taming or breeding. It only burns through food.
  • Tamed animals join your faction. Normal weapons cannot hurt them; only the Butcher knife or friendly fire can.
  • Tames attack any wild creature except their own species, and never other tames.
  • Tames keep their stars. Babies get the stars of the parent that gives birth.
  • Breeding rolls every 30 s with a 33% chance of a love point. The animal must be fed, calm, near a tamed partner that is fed and not pregnant, and under the population cap.
  • Animals that are already pregnant still give birth, so pens end up a little over the cap.
  • Babies are tame at birth, grow while you sleep or are away, and cannot be commanded or renamed until adult.

Tips

Practical advice and the quirks that catch people out, per animal.

Any animal
  • A pit dug with a pickaxe works better than a fenced pen. Luring an animal usually makes it hostile, and it will attack walls if it can see you past them.
  • Keep out of its line of sight while it eats. Getting close enough to read the progress percentage often frightens it.
  • Put a workbench near the pen so dropped food does not despawn, then you can throw in several stacks at once.
  • Animals on wood poles or 1x1 floors can fail the pathing check and never eat. Give them proper ground.
  • Animals standing on a boat deck can be killed instantly by collisions. Load them by breaking the planks they stand on.
  • Roof the pen if raids are on. Bat raids in particular can wipe out tames that are out in the open.
